Silicon nitride as a biomaterial

چکیده

Three decades of research in the last century developed silicon nitride (Si3N4) as one strongest and toughest ceramic material for structural applications; but this century, we newly discovered its gifted surface biochemistry. In an aqueous environment, Si3N4 undergoes hydrolysis with slow continuous elution both nitrogen. A unique environment is created, which greatly enhances healing soft osseous tissues, inhibits bacterial biofilm formation, eradicates viruses. The discovery Si3N4’s biochemistry opens new paths a wide array different disciplines inside outside physical body, including orthopedics, dentistry, virology, agronomy, environmental remediation. biomedical field, it paves way generation monolithic, composite, or coated implants bone healing, spinal arthrodesis, joint arthroplasty, craniomaxillofacial dental devices. This review describes chemistry comparison oxide ceramics. It discusses pH-dependent kinetics ammonia ammonium main phenomenon behind unparalleled behavior demonstrates friendly nature to mammalian cells while concurrently lysing invasive pathogens. Finally, wider perspective offered future applications disease diagnosis therapies, personal healthcare, agriculture, food water safety, protection.

In this proposal we seek to establish a porous silicon based etching process in the WTC microfabrication laboratory. The new process will allow us to etch high aspect ratio holes through a wafer. Holes like these are important for decreasing the dead volume of connections between micro and macro systems and for increasing the complexity of micro-fluidic systems. At the present time, the minimum...

Nano-ridge fabrication by local oxidation of silicon edges with silicon nitride as a mask

A method to fabricate nano-ridges over a full wafer is presented. The fabrication method uses local oxidation of silicon, with silicon nitride as a mask, and wet anisotropic etching of silicon. The realized structures are 7–20 nm wide, 40–100 nm high and centimeters long. All dimensions are easily adjustable by varying the oxidation time, the wet etching time and the mask geometry, respectively...

The Etching of Silicon Nitride in Phosphoric Acid with Silicon Dioxide as a Mask

The water content of phosphoric acid in etching silicon nitride and silicon dioxide plays an important role. An increase in water content increases the etch rate of silicon nitride and decreases the etch rate of silicon dioxide. The highest possible temperature for a fixed water content at atmospheric pressure in the system H2O-P2O5 is realized by boiling the liquid and refluxing the vapor phas...

Zirconia as a ceramic biomaterial.

Zirconia ceramics have several advantages over other ceramic materials, due to the transformation toughening mechanisms operating in their microstructure that can give to components made out of them, very interesting mechanical properties. The research on the use of zirconia ceramics as biomaterials started about twenty years ago, and now zirconia (Y-YZP) is in clinical use in THR, but developm...
